What the battery tax costs at real weights
Freight is a fixed cost per kilogram, and electronics adds a second lever on top. Every parcel in the category, battery or not, carries a 1.18x rate multiplier, because lithium goods need channels that accept them and handling that most parcels never get. What it actually costs to ship a electronics order

The battery tax and the DOA problem
A lithium cell changes what a parcel costs and how it is allowed to fly. On our rate card the change is explicit: a 0.3 kg smartwatch to the US on standard is 0.3 × $14.47 + $5.75 = $10.09 base, and $11.91 after the 1.18x multiplier. That $1.82 is the battery tax. At 500 orders a month it is $910, which is either a line in your margin model or a surprise on your invoice.
- Why the multiplier exists
- Lithium cells are dangerous goods on the air leg. Only some line-haul channels accept them, and those channels charge for the extra handling and documentation. The 1.18x is that reality passed through at cost, not a category penalty we invented.
- UN 3481, the rule on the air leg
- Lithium ion batteries packed with or contained in equipment fly under UN 3481. From 1 January 2026, the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (67th edition) require batteries packed with equipment above 2.7 Wh to ship at 30% state of charge or less. Batteries sealed inside equipment, like a smartwatch, carry a 30% recommendation rather than a mandate.
- The DOA problem
- Some fraction of every electronics batch is dead on arrival from the factory. A function test at the warehouse catches those units before dispatch, and no other single check moves your refund rate as much.
Run the DOA math once. A dead unit caught in Shenzhen costs you a replacement unit. The same unit caught by your customer costs the product, $11.91 of outbound freight, a return conversation you cannot win, and usually the review. Four marks, one air rule, and the party they land on
The marks govern where you can sell. The air rule governs whether the parcel flies at all. And every one of these obligations lands on you as the importer, not on the factory that printed the logo on the housing.
- CE is the manufacturer's declaration that a product meets the EU rules that apply to it. For most gadgets that pulls in the EMC Directive 2014/30/EU, and the Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU for anything with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
- FCC Part 15 governs radio-frequency devices in the US market. Wireless gadgets need FCC authorization before they are sold there.
- RoHS, Directive 2011/65/EU, restricts ten hazardous substances in electronics, lead, mercury and cadmium among them, most capped at 0.1% by weight. RoHS conformity is part of what the CE mark declares.
- UKCA is Great Britain's own conformity mark, but per gov.uk the Product Safety and Metrology etc (Amendment) Regulations 2024 extended recognition of CE marking indefinitely for most product regulations, so a CE-marked gadget still sells in GB.
- UN 3481 covers lithium ion batteries packed with or contained in equipment on the air leg, under the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. The 30% state-of-charge mandate for batteries packed with equipment above 2.7 Wh took effect 1 January 2026.
- The mark is not the test report. A printed CE or FCC logo proves nothing by itself. Ask the factory for the Declaration of Conformity and the test reports behind it, and check that the issuing lab exists.
What we check before an electronics parcel ships
A visual inspection that works for apparel will pass a smartwatch that never boots. Electronics fails invisibly, which is why the check in this category is functional, not cosmetic. These are the points our team works through in Shenzhen before a label is printed.
- Power-on function test on every batch. A unit that does not boot never gets a label, and a batch with multiple failures goes back to the factory before your orders touch it.
- One full charge cycle on battery goods. This surfaces cells that will not hold charge and chargers that run hot, the two failures a power-on test alone misses.
- Port and cable fit, checked physically. A USB-C port that needs force, or a bundled cable that does not seat, arrives as a broken product in the customer's hands.
- Pairing test on wireless items against a standard handset. Bluetooth that connects on the third attempt photographs as working and reviews as broken.
- DOA screening before dispatch, so a dead unit costs a replacement in Shenzhen rather than a refund, two freight legs, and a one-star review.

Buying electronics at the factory price
Most electronics sourcing reaches you with a margin already buried in the product price, typically 30% to 60% above what the factory charges. You never see the real number, so you cannot tell a component price rise from an increase in the middleman's cut. Where electronics dropshipping goes wrong
The category has real advantages. It also has four dependable ways to lose money, so weigh them before you commit.
- The battery tax never goes away. Every parcel pays the 1.18x multiplier, and fewer channels accept lithium goods. If your margin model was built on non-battery rates, it is wrong by 18% on the freight line.
- Returns are usually write-offs. A returned gadget cannot be economically refurbished across an ocean. Budget replacements, not repairs, and let the DOA screen keep that number small.
- Certification paperwork is often unverifiable. Plenty of low-cost gadgets circulate with CE and FCC logos that no test report stands behind. Verifying the Declaration of Conformity takes real time, and as importer the liability is yours.
- Generic gadgets are saturated. The same earbuds sit on countless stores. Without a brand angle, better packaging, or a tested-before-dispatch story, you are competing on ad spend alone.
