What the 1.18x multiplier costs you per parcel
Statista's Smart Home Market Outlook projects worldwide smart home revenue at $159.5 billion in 2026, so demand is the easy part. The freight math needs more respect. Every parcel in this category is electronics, most contain a lithium cell, and both ship at 1.18x the base rate card. That costs you $1.49 on a smart plug and $4.01 on a hub kit. Price off the base card and that gap comes straight out of your margin. Price point sets how much room you have: a $65 doorbell carries its freight at roughly a quarter of the sale, while a $25 plug gives up nearly two fifths of it before the ad bill arrives.

It works, but does it pair
Most smart home returns are working devices that never made it onto the buyer's network or into the buyer's app. The factory tested the unit, the courier delivered it, and the customer still calls it broken. Three region traps cause almost all of it, and every one is checkable before the parcel leaves Shenzhen.
- Trap 1: the radio band
- Sub-GHz protocols are region locked by the regulator, not the factory. Z-Wave runs at 868.42 MHz in Europe and 908.4 MHz in North America per the protocol's published frequency coverage tables, and the two never interoperate. Wi-Fi has its own version of the trap: channels 12 and 13 are usable in Europe but not permitted for normal use in the US under FCC rules. An EU-firmware device parked on channel 13 is invisible to many US routers.
- Trap 2: the plug and the voltage
- A US wall outlet delivers 120V through Type A and B plugs. The UK is 230V on Type G, continental Europe 230V on Type C and F, Australia 230V on Type I, per IEC world plug listings. One product photo hides four physical variants, and the wrong one arrives as a return with the box already opened.
- Trap 3: the app
- If registration needs a mainland Chinese phone number, if the servers sit behind slow international routing, or if the app only exists on a mainland store, the hardware is fine and the product is dead. Search the destination market's app store for the app in English before you list. If it is not there, walk away.
- The fix: pair-test before dispatch

Radio rules land on you, the importer
Every smart home gadget is a radio transmitter, and radio transmitters are regulated on both sides of the Atlantic. The obligations sit with whoever places the product on the market, which in a dropshipping setup is you, not the factory.
- EU: CE marking under the Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU. Any device with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or Zigbee falls under RED. The CE mark goes on the product and packaging, and the importer must keep the EU declaration of conformity available for authorities for 10 years and put their contact details on the product.
- US: FCC equipment authorization under 47 CFR Part 15. Intentional radiators, which covers Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Zigbee devices, must be certified through an FCC-recognised Telecommunication Certification Body before importation or marketing, and carry an FCC ID.
- Ask for the paperwork before you list. A factory that has done this before can produce the FCC ID and the EU declaration of conformity in a day. A factory that cannot has probably never exported a certified device to your market; keep looking.
- Wrong band is a legal problem on top of the pairing one. Sub-GHz allocations differ between the FCC and European regulators, which is why Z-Wave hardware is built in regional variants in the first place.
- Batteries ride under air cargo rules. Lithium cells built into devices should carry a UN 38.3 test summary, the standard transport test under the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria referenced by IATA dangerous goods rules, and battery goods carry our 1.18x rate multiplier.
