The dropshipping profit formula
Four numbers decide whether a product is worth listing, and the calculator runs them in this order.
- Landed cost = product cost + shipping
- Profit per order = selling price − landed cost − payment fee − ad cost per order
- Margin = profit ÷ selling price × 100
- Break-even ad cost = selling price − landed cost − payment fee
Take a $6.50 product that sells for $29.99, weighs 0.3 kg and ships standard to the US. Shipping at our published rate is $10.09, so it lands at $16.59. A 3% payment fee takes $0.90, and at $8.00 of ad spend per order you keep $4.50, a 15.0% margin. You break even on ads at $12.50 per order.
That last number is the one to watch. It is the most you can pay to win one order before the sale loses money, so it tells you straight away whether your ad account can carry the product. For four worked examples across different products, see how to calculate dropshipping profit.
Dropshipping price calculator: set a price that holds your margin
Most sellers pick a price and then check the margin. It works better the other way round: decide the margin you need after every cost, then solve for the price.

What the estimate leaves out
- Import duty and taxes. They depend on the product and the destination, and both the US and the EU have ended duty-free entry for low-value parcels since 2025. The detail is in our Section 321 guide and EU de minimis guide.
- Refunds and returns. Budget a share of revenue for them, more for apparel than for accessories. Here is how brands cut returns from 8% to 2%.
- Chargebacks. Slow delivery drives disputes, and each lost one costs you the sale plus a fee. The math is in the real cost of slow shipping.
- Store tools. Monthly apps and subscriptions, spread across your orders.

How do you calculate dropshipping profit?
Profit per order is the selling price minus the landed cost, the payment fee and the ad cost per order, where landed cost is product cost plus shipping. A $6.50 product that sells for $29.99 and ships standard to the US at 0.3 kg lands at $16.59. After a 3% payment fee and $8.00 of ad spend it keeps $4.50 per order, a 15.0% margin.
How do I calculate the selling price for a dropshipping product?
Choose the margin you need after every cost, then divide landed cost plus ad cost by one minus your payment fee rate minus that margin. For the example product, landed at $16.59 with $8.00 of ad spend and a 3% payment fee, a 30% margin needs a price of $36.70 and a 40% margin needs $43.14.
What is a good profit margin for dropshipping?
Typical dropshipping margins run 10-15% when sourcing from open marketplaces, and healthy stores aim well above that. Sourcing factory-direct is the biggest single lever, because a middleman’s margin comes straight out of yours.
How much does shipping from China cost for dropshipping?
At our published standard rates, a 0.1 kg parcel costs $6.90 to the US and $6.04 to the UK, and a 0.5 kg parcel costs $15.09 to the US. Weight moves the price more than anything else, so light products keep far more of each sale.
Does the calculator include import duty?
No. Duty depends on what the product is and where it goes, so the estimate covers product, shipping, payment fees and ads only. Duty now matters on low-value parcels: goods from China lost US de minimis treatment on 2 May 2025, and from 1 July 2026 the EU charges a €3 duty per item category on low-value parcels. Add your product’s duty before you set a price.
