Jewelry dropshipping: margins, plating, and what it costs to ship
Jewelry ships at 0.05 to 0.2 kg, the lightest category we handle, so freight takes the smallest bite out of your margin of any niche. Gross margins in the category run 60% to 85%, with a realistic net of 15% to 35% after ads, fees and refunds. Whether you keep that net comes down to plating thickness, a spec you can demand in writing before you order.
Why jewelry is the strongest-margin category to ship from China
Freight is a fixed cost per kilogram, and it does not care what your product sells for. That one fact decides which categories work from China and which bleed margin on every order. Ship a 0.1 kg necklace and freight takes roughly a fifth of a $35 sale. Ship a 2.5 kg winter jacket and freight eats nearly three quarters of a $60 sale before you have paid for the product or the ad. Jewelry sits at the light end of that curve, and no other category is close.
| Category | Typical parcel | Shipping to the US | Typical sale | Freight takes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jewelry | 0.1 kg | $6.90 | $35 | 19.7% |
| Apparel | 0.4 kg | $11.68 | $40 | 29.2% |
| Phone accessories | 0.2 kg | $8.31 | $25 | 33.2% |
| Beauty and cosmetics | 0.3 kg | $10.09 | $30 | 33.6% |
| Kitchen gadgets | 1.0 kg | $22.25 | $35 | 63.6% |
| Fitness gear | 1.5 kg | $29.49 | $45 | 65.5% |
| Winter sports | 2.5 kg | $43.96 | $60 | 73.3% |

What it actually costs to ship a jewelry order
Set the weight to a typical piece and pick the destination. Orders leave the warehouse in under 24 hours on average, and land on Tier-1 lanes in 6.6 days on average, dispatch and transit combined. Your customer sees their local carrier on the tracking page, not a China leg.

Plating thickness decides your refund rate
Sellers who quit jewelry usually blame the ads, but the more common killer is a batch of rings that looked perfect in the photos and turned green in three weeks. Plating thickness is a specification you can demand in writing before you place an order. Almost nobody does, which is why it is the easiest edge in the category.
- Under 0.5 microns
- Flash plating, cosmetic only. It wears through within weeks of daily wear, and each worn-through piece comes back as a refund.
- 2.5 microns minimum
- What you should be specifying for anything a customer wears daily. Heavy gold plating survives real use.
- Gold over nickel
- Still a risk. A thin or soft gold coat lets nickel migrate through, and the piece can fail EN 1811 testing, so ask for the test report instead of assuming the gold layer protects you.
- Why batches drift
- Depleted plating solution, base-metal alloy substitution between runs, and equipment changes mid-order. This is a process problem, so final inspection alone cannot rescue it.
This is the same failure mode as sample-to-bulk drift in any category. Your sample is perfect because it was made by hand, with attention. Order three is made on a production line with a tired plating bath. See how sample-to-bulk drift happens →
Nickel, cadmium, and the rules that land on you
Selling jewelry into the EU puts the compliance obligation on you, the importer, rather than the factory. Most sellers find that out too late, so here is what the rules say.
- Cadmium must stay under 0.01% by weight under EU REACH.
- Nickel release must stay under 0.5 micrograms per square centimetre per week, and under 0.2 for anything worn in a piercing. EN 1811 is the test method.
- You are the responsible party. Importers bringing jewelry in from outside the EU carry the REACH obligation themselves.
- Children's pieces are stricter. Jewelry for under-14s intended as play is treated as a toy, which pulls in CE marking.
- Some materials are banned outright. Ivory, tortoiseshell, coral and certain shells fall under CITES.
- Know your code. Imitation jewelry classifies under HS 7117. Precious metal is HS 7113 and carries a different duty treatment entirely.
What we check before a jewelry parcel ships
Jewelry fails in ways a generic inspection never catches. A parcel check that works for phone cases will pass a necklace with a weak clasp and a plating batch two shades off. These are the points our team works through in Shenzhen.
- Plating consistency across the batch, not only on the top piece in the carton.
- Clasp tension and spring-ring function. The single most common structural return.
- Stone seating, checked by hand. Loose settings arrive as broken product.
- Chain link integrity under light tension, because links fail at the join.
- Bulk against the approved sample for colour and finish, which is where drift shows first.
Our QC pass rate runs at 99.6%, and delivery accuracy at 99.8%. See how the photo check works →
Buying jewelry at the factory price
Most sourcing in this category comes to you with a margin already buried inside the product price, typically 30% to 60% above what the factory charges. You never see the real number, so you cannot tell a price rise from an increase in someone else's cut. We take 0% on the goods and make our money on the fulfillment, so the factory price you see is the factory price. Send us the piece you want to sell: quotes come back same-day in 92% of cases, and samples land in 5 to 10 days.
The one category where the box can cost more than the product
Jewelry is bought on perceived value, and perceived value is mostly the unboxing. A pouch, a rigid box and an insert card can cost more than a $2 chain and still be the highest-return spend in your whole operation. It is also what separates a brand from an arbitrage store selling the same chain, and the Brand plan lets you test that presentation without the 5,000-unit commitment factories usually quote.
Where jewelry dropshipping goes wrong
The margins are real, and so are the problems. Weigh these four before you commit.
- Generic pieces are saturated. The same stainless chain is on a thousand stores. Without a brand angle or a packaging upgrade you are competing on ad spend alone.
- Over-edited photos drive returns. Jewelry photographs better than it looks. The bigger the gap between the listing shot and the parcel, the higher your refund rate.
- Magnetic clasps need a check before you list. The air rule limits the magnetic field escaping the packed carton, not the magnet itself, and shielding and carton layout decide the outcome. Send us the specific piece before you list it and we confirm how it ships.
- We do not serve fine jewelry. Precious metal and stones are a different duty regime, a different insurance profile and a different business. If that is your plan, we are not the right partner.
