Make Peregrine your default fulfillment location in Shopify

The required step that lets us ship your orders. Skip it and orders sync but never fulfill.

By Peregrine Ship Updated Jun 18, 2026

Shopify has no single default location switch. You cannot tell it to always use Peregrine Ship. Instead, an order routes to us when a few settings line up, and once you set them they hold for every future order. This guide covers each one so you never change a location by hand again.

Step 1: Set Peregrine Ship as your default fulfillment location

A product can only route to us when it is active at the Peregrine Ship location. This step turns our location on across your catalog. Pick the route that matches your scale.

Watch the full setup, then follow the steps below.

Route A: one product, fast

Best for a single product with many variants.

  1. Open the product. In the Variants section, click the top checkbox to select all variants
  2. Click Open bulk editor, or More actions, then Edit variants
  3. Click Columns and add the Peregrine Ship location column
  4. Set Peregrine Ship to Stocked on the first row, then click and drag down the column to fill every row
  5. Click Save

Route B: whole store, by CSV

The only method that scales to your entire catalog at once.

  1. Back up first: Products, then Export, then All products. Keep this copy untouched
  2. Export the inventory file: Products, then Inventory, then Export
  3. In the file, set the Peregrine Ship column to stocked for every row. Leave your own location column as it is, so both stay active
  4. Save as CSV, then Products, Inventory, Import, and review the summary for errors

Step 2: Rank Peregrine Ship first in order routing

This makes Peregrine Ship the preferred location whenever it can handle an order. Your own location becomes the automatic fallback.

Watch the order routing setup, then follow the steps below.
  1. Open Settings, then Order routing
  2. You will see two rules: Minimize split fulfillments first, then Use ranked locations. Leave both, in that order
  3. Click the pencil icon on Use ranked locations
  4. Put Peregrine Ship in the top location group, and your own location in the group below it
  5. Click Done, then Save if prompted

Step 3: Choose tracked or untracked per line

For China-direct dropship lines, untracked inventory is the simplest setup and removes the sold-out problem, because Shopify stops blocking orders on stock count. For lines where you hold your own stock, keep tracking on so you get stockout protection and real data.

  • Dropship lines: untracked, and active at Peregrine Ship. Simplest, and never shows sold out
  • Owned-stock lines: tracked, so you keep low-stock alerts and accurate data

Step 4: Confirm the app is syncing stock

This is the real lever for every future product.

  1. Open the Peregrine Ship app from your Shopify admin
  2. Find the inventory or stock sync settings
  3. Confirm it is pushing stock to the Peregrine Ship location for your assigned products

Step 5: Test before you trust it

  1. Place a test order for an assigned product
  2. Open the order and check that the fulfillment location reads Peregrine Ship
  3. Confirm the order timeline shows the app accepting and processing fulfillment

Clean up existing orders

Routing changes are not retroactive. Orders already placed and routed to your own location stay there. Clear them in one pass.

  1. Filter your unfulfilled orders to see how many are affected
  2. Open an order, then the More actions menu, then Change location
  3. Select Peregrine Ship, then fulfill, or let the app pick it up

Keep new products on Peregrine Ship automatically

There is no native default, so the automation lives wherever your products get created:

  • App-created products: set the app to activate and stock Peregrine Ship on sync. Fully automatic, and the best option
  • Manual products: build one product configured correctly, then duplicate it, since duplication carries the location setup
  • CSV uploads: keep a master CSV with the Peregrine Ship column pre-filled as stocked

Peregrine Ship shows 0 stockThe app has not synced yet, or the product mapping or SKU is incomplete (Step 5).
Cannot click Mark as fulfilledExpected for app-location orders. Change the order location to one you manage first.
New product not on Peregrine ShipNo native default exists. Fix it upstream at product creation, see the section above.

Common questions

Why is there no default location setting in Shopify?

Shopify routes each order by which location is active for the product and how locations are ranked, not by a single switch. Peregrine Ship is an app location, so it never appears in the Default location dropdown, that list only shows native Shopify locations. Activate your products at Peregrine Ship and rank us first, and every order routes to us on its own.

Why does my product show sold out?

Almost always because Peregrine Ship has no shipping rate for the customer country, or that country is not in an active zone or market. Add a rate for Peregrine Ship under Settings, then Shipping and delivery, and confirm your zones and Markets.

Do untracked products still need to be active at Peregrine Ship?

Yes. Tracking and assignment are separate. An untracked product still routes by the location it is active at, so it must be active at Peregrine Ship.

Will this fix orders I already placed?

No. Routing changes are not retroactive. Use Change location on existing orders to move them to Peregrine Ship, as shown above.

Does this cost anything?

No. These are free Shopify settings. You only pay Peregrine when an order actually ships.

Next: sync your store

Make sure your catalog is imported. Sync your Shopify products.

Then sync your Shopify orders to pull in any orders placed before you connected.
